Beyond rankings: Learning (more) from algorithm validation.
Challenges have become the state-of-the-art approach to benchmark image analysis algorithms in a comparative manner. While the validation on identical data sets was a great step forward, results analysis is often restricted to pure ranking tables, leaving relevant questions unanswered. [...]

Low level of antioxidant capacity biomarkers but not target overexpression predicts vulnerability to ROS-inducing drugs.
Despite a strong rationale for why cancer cells are susceptible to redox-targeting drugs, such drugs often face tumor resistance or dose-limiting toxicity in preclinical and clinical studies. An important reason is the lack of specific biomarkers to better select susceptible cancer entities and stratify patients. [...]

Spectral imaging enables contrast agent-free real-time ischemia monitoring in laparoscopic surgery.
Laparoscopic surgery has evolved as a key technique for cancer diagnosis and therapy. While characterization of the tissue perfusion is crucial in various procedures, such as partial nephrectomy, doing so by means of visual inspection remains highly challenging. [...]

Comparative validation of machine learning algorithms for surgical workflow and skill analysis with the HeiChole benchmark.
Surgical workflow and skill analysis are key technologies for the next generation of cognitive surgical assistance systems. These systems could increase the safety of the operation through context-sensitive warnings and semi-autonomous robotic assistance or improve training of surgeons via data-driven feedback. [...]

Bovine meat and milk factor protein expression in tumor-free mucosa of colorectal cancer patients coincides with macrophages and might interfere with patient survival.
Bovine milk and meat factors (BMMFs) are plasmid-like DNA molecules isolated from bovine milk and serum, as well as the peritumor of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. BMMFs have been proposed as zoonotic infectious agents and drivers of indirect carcinogenesis of CRC, inducing chronic tissue inflammation, radical formation and increased levels of DNA damage. [...]

MicroRNAs affecting the susceptibility of melanoma cells to CD8+ T cell-mediated cytolysis.
The regulatory functions of microRNAs (miRNAs) in anti-tumour immunity have been mainly described in immune effector cells. Since little is known about miRNA effects on the susceptibility of target cells during T cell-target cell interaction, this study focused on the identification of miRNAs expressed in tumour cells controlling their susceptibility to CD8+ T cell-mediated cytotoxicity.Luciferase expressing B16F10 melanoma (B16F10 Luci+ ) cells transfected with individual miRNAs covering a comprehensive murine miRNA library were screened for their susceptibility to lysis by an established cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) line (5a, clone Nβ) specific for the melanoma-associated antigen tyrosinase-related protein 2. A comparative assessment of intra- and inter- observer repeatability of three widely used software packages for the quantification of defect size in stress myocardial perfusion scintigraphy.
Hellenic journal of nuclear medicine 25(3), 274-284 ()  GO
To assess the intra- and inter-observer repeatability of popular software packages for the quantitative determination of abnormality size in stress myocardial perfusion scintigraphy.A total of 182 tomographic stress myocardial perfusion scans were processed in duplicate by an experienced and trainee observer to assess SSSext (summed stress score multiplied by 100/68) and total defect extent (TDE), as % of the left ventricle, with 4 dimension-myocardial (4DM), emory cardiac toolbox (ECTb) and quantitative perfusion SPECT (QPS) packages. The Bland-Altman (B-A) analysis and Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) were used to assess agreement. In SSSext's intra-observer repeatability, CCC showed substantial agreement for 4DM and QPS, and moderate agreement for ECTb for both observers. [...]

Biomedical image analysis competitions: The state of current participation practice
arXiv () [10.48550/ARXIV.2212.08568]  GO
The number of international benchmarking competitions is steadily increasing in various fields of machine learning (ML) research and practice. So far, however, little is known about the common practice as well as bottlenecks faced by the community in tackling the research questions posed. [...]
