Evidence of abortive lytic replication in some tumors and infections with recombinant viruses incapable of lytic replication in animal models have reinforced this view. Furthermore, multiple lytic proteins have been shown to induce genetic instability, a well-characterized precancerous state. In particular, lytic proteins dysregulated the DNA damage response, interfered with cell cycle progression, and induced the development of structural genetic abnormalities. However, there is so far no direct evidence from in vivo or in vitro studies that lytic replication alone can induce cancer. Here, we critically review the currently available evidence that EBV lytic replication contributes to cancer development and suggest future research directions. 000296014 536__ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF4-314$$a314 - Immunologie und Krebs (POF4-314)$$cPOF4-314$$fPOF IV$$x0 000296014 588__ $$aDataset connected to CrossRef, PubMed, , Journals: inrepo02.dkfz.de 000296014 7001_ $$0P:(DE-He78)ea25dbd9617667864c867bab0b1142db$$aLee, Chih-Ying$$b1$$eFirst author$$udkfz 000296014 7001_ $$0P:(DE-He78)25d3c74b949988c637571e696fc04b25$$aDelecluse, Henri-Jacques$$b2$$eLast author$$udkfz 000296014 773__ $$0PERI:(DE-600)2611378-8$$a10.1016/j.coviro.2024.101438$$gVol. 70, p. 101438 -$$p101438$$tCurrent opinion in virology$$v70$$x1879-6257$$y2025 000296014 909CO $$ooai:inrepo02.dkfz.de:296014$$pVDB 000296014 9101_ $$0I:(DE-588b)2036810-0$$6P:(DE-He78)5b422df679d8af3361c421d51f9420ed$$aDeutsches Krebsforschungszentrum$$b0$$kDKFZ 000296014 9101_ $$0I:(DE-588b)2036810-0$$6P:(DE-He78)ea25dbd9617667864c867bab0b1142db$$aDeutsches Krebsforschungszentrum$$b1$$kDKFZ 000296014 9101_ $$0I:(DE-588b)2036810-0$$6P:(DE-He78)25d3c74b949988c637571e696fc04b25$$aDeutsches Krebsforschungszentrum$$b2$$kDKFZ 000296014 9131_ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF4-314$$1G:(DE-HGF)POF4-310$$2G:(DE-HGF)POF4-300$$3G:(DE-HGF)POF4$$4G:(DE-HGF)POF$$aDE-HGF$$bGesundheit$$lKrebsforschung$$vImmunologie und Krebs$$x0 000296014 9141_ $$y2024 000296014 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0300$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bMedline$$d2023-08-26 000296014 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0199$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bClarivate Analytics Master Journal List$$d2023-08-26 000296014 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)1050$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bBIOSIS Previews$$d2023-08-26 000296014 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0113$$2StatID$$aWoS$$bScience Citation Index Expanded$$d2023-08-26 000296014 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0150$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bWeb of Science Core Collection$$d2023-08-26 000296014 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)1120$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bBIOSIS Reviews Reports And Meetings$$d2023-08-26 000296014 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0160$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bEssential Science Indicators$$d2023-08-26 000296014 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0100$$2StatID$$aJCR$$bCURR OPIN VIROL : 2022$$d2023-08-26 000296014 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0200$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bSCOPUS$$d2023-08-26 000296014 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)9905$$2StatID$$aIF >= 5$$bCURR OPIN VIROL : 2022$$d2023-08-26 000296014 9202_ $$0I:(DE-He78)D400-20160331$$kD400$$lPathologie infektionsbedingter Tumoren$$x0 000296014 9201_ $$0I:(DE-He78)D400-20160331$$kD400$$lPathologie infektionsbedingter Tumoren$$x0 000296014 9200_ $$0I:(DE-He78)D400-20160331$$kD400$$lPathologie infektionsbedingter Tumoren$$x0 000296014 980__ $$ajournal 000296014 980__ $$aVDB 000296014 980__ $$aI:(DE-He78)D400-20160331 000296014 980__ $$aUNRESTRICTED
