In 2019, thispeculiar radioprotective effect was observed in humans for the first time. In orderto implement FLASH as a new technique in clinics, one has to understand howthe effect mechanism works. This master thesis contributes to the understandingof FLASH by investigating the dynamics of the radicals which are producedduring irradiation. Furthermore, also the Oxygen Depletion Hypothesis (ODH)is investigated and if it is able to explain the FLASH effect. In order to achievethat, TRAXChem is used as a simulation program which is able to outputall the necessary information about the radical dynamics. Furthermore, theoxygen depletion effect will be described and a pathway is shown in orderto quantify the depletion of oxygen. Moreover, not only the micro-moleculardistribution of radicals is investigated but also the macro-molecular distribution. For that, a mapping between the micro- and macro-molecular distribution will beshown. This can be used in order to assess if it is possible in clinics to generatehomogeneous radical distributions in a larger volume. In the end, one importantquestion should be answered: Is FLASH a physical or biological effect? 000166146 536__ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF3-315$$a315 - Imaging and radiooncology (POF3-315)$$cPOF3-315$$fPOF III$$x0 000166146 909CO $$ooai:inrepo02.dkfz.de:166146$$pVDB 000166146 9101_ $$0I:(DE-588b)2036810-0$$6P:(DE-He78)8cc7a5c2b253317f7b005e2e6a3b7a05$$aDeutsches Krebsforschungszentrum$$b0$$kDKFZ 000166146 9131_ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF3-315$$1G:(DE-HGF)POF3-310$$2G:(DE-HGF)POF3-300$$3G:(DE-HGF)POF3$$4G:(DE-HGF)POF$$aDE-HGF$$bGesundheit$$lKrebsforschung$$vImaging and radiooncology$$x0 000166146 9141_ $$y2020 000166146 9201_ $$0I:(DE-He78)E041-20160331$$kE041$$lE041 Medizinische Physik in der Radioonkologie$$x0 000166146 980__ $$amaster 000166146 980__ $$aVDB 000166146 980__ $$aI:(DE-He78)E041-20160331 000166146 980__ $$aUNRESTRICTED
