Abstract: This fact sheet aims to inform about the main epidemiological statistics and trends as well as the economic burden of prostate cancer (ICD-10-GM C61) in Germany. For the epidemiology figures, data from the German Centre for Cancer Registry Data (ZfKD) at Robert Koch Institute (RKI) was used. The database was instituted in 2009 through the Federal Cancer Registry Cancer Act and has been collating data from the regional cancer registries on an annual basis since 2011. ZfKD cancer records have been estimated to cover 93 percent of all new cancer cases in 2014 (RKI, 2018). To further allow for an international comparison, epidemiology data for other countries was extracted from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation’s (IHME) Global Burden of Disease report. The information on the economic burden was gathered through rapid literature research on prostate cancer cost studies using PubMed and Google Scholar. Furthermore, grey literature data sources published by several public agencies such as the Federal Statistical Office, the Global Burden of Disease Network, and from the health insurance company Barmer were consulted.
